Dermatology

Dermatology

Dermatology is the branch of medicine dealing with the skin, nails, hair and its diseases. It is a specialty with both medical and surgical aspects. A dermatologist treats diseases, in the widest sense, and some cosmetic problems of the skin, scalp, hair, and nails.

Dermatologists diagnose and treat more than 3,000 different diseases. These diseases include skin cancer, eczema, acne, psoriasis, and nail infections.

Dermatologists also improve the appearance of their patients' skin, hair, and nails. For example, a dermatologist can help patients:

Diminish wrinkles, age spots, and other signs of aging.
Have less noticeable acne scars.
Look more like themselves after surgery to remove skin cancer.
Dermatologists see patients of all ages — from newborns to people older than 100 years of age.

what is a hair transplant

What Is a Hair Transplant?

Used in the U.S. since the 1950 s, hair transplantation is surgery that involves removing a narrow strip of hair-bearing scalp from the back of the head and using it to fill an area with thin or no hair.

Most hair transplants are performed in the doector's offic under local anesthesia.

To transplant hair, the surgeon first cleans the scalp, then injects an anesthetic to numb the area where a 3- to 4-inch strip of scalp will be removed. After removing the strip of scalp with a scalpel, the surgeon sets it aside and sews the scalp closed. This area is immediately hidden by the hair around it.

Next, the surgeon divides the strip of removed scalp into approximately 500 to 2,000 tiny grafts containing an individual hair or just a few hairs each. The number and type of graft used depends on the hair type, quality, and color as well as the size of the area where it will be transplanted.

After the grafts are prepared, the surgeon cleans and numbs the area where the hair will be placed, creates holes or slits with a scalpel or needle, and delicately places each graft in one of the holes.

Depending on the extent of the procedure, the transplant will take approximately four to eight hours. Additional sessions may be needed if you continue to lose hair or decide you want thicker hair.

Expectations and Recovery

After hair transplant surgery, your scalp may be very tender. You may need to take pain medications for several days. Your surgeon will have you wear a surgical dressing over the scalp for at least a day or two. Your surgeon may also prescribe an antibiotic and/or anti-inflammatory drug to be taken for several days following surgery. Most people are able to return to work two to five days after surgery.

Within two to three weeks after surgery, the transplanted hair will fall out, but you should start to notice new growth within a few months. Most people will have attained 60% of new hair growth after six to nine months. Some surgeons prescribe the hair-growing drug minoxidil (Rogaine) to improve hair growth following transplantation, but it is not known how effective this is.

What Is Hair Rebonding And How To Do It?

Everyone loves to have straight and manageable locks. With the growing number of young fashionistas and advertisements showing straight locks, this trend is definitely on the rise. Women are desperately trying to get that poker straight hair and are spending a lot on permanent hair treatments. One of the most popular among these treatments is Hair Re-bonding!

Hair re-bonding is similar to straightening your hair with a straightener but here, chemicals are used to break the natural bonds of the cells in the hair and then they are rearranged to get straight hair. In this technique, a relaxant or a softener is used to break the natural bonds in the hair and then it is followed by the use of a neutralizer to re-bond the structure again, giving you the desired texture and bonding.

Steps for Hair Rebonding:
Here is a step by step description on the usual hair rebonding process:

1. Initially hair is washed and shampooed. The shampoo used for this step is fairly mild and the conditioner is avoided here as its applied in the later steps.

2. Hair is then left to dry naturally or is dried using a drier using the medium setting.

3. Next comes the actual process of re bonding, but before that,  hair is parted and divided into different sections and the number of these sections depends on the thickness and the volume of the hair.

4. Now the Conditioner or Relaxant we mentioned earlier is applied to each of the sections separately while keeping the hair straight. Thin plastic boards are used to keep the hair straight making sure that the cream is applied, covering each and every strand of the hair.

5. The cream relaxant is now applied and left to work its magic. For normal and wavy hair, it might take nearly about 30 min or more. For other hair types, like dry and frizzy hair, the cream can be left on for a little extra time but make sure not to exceed the recommended time as it might ruin the hair.

6. The next step is steaming the hair for 10-40 minutes depending upon the texture and the condition of the hair.

7. Then the hair is rinsed and blow dried until it is dry.

8. Now keratin lotion is applied to your hair and a flat iron is used to iron away any curls which are left.

9. Once your hair is satisfactorily straight, it is again parted and a neutraliser is applied on the hair to set the bonds back to stabilize the hair structure.

10. After leaving the hair neutraliser for at least 30 minutes, the hair is rinsed off and then blow dried once again.

11. Then a hair serum is applied to your hair to give your hair nourishment.

12. After application of serum, it is ironed

And now you have a silky straight hair that you have always dreamed of!

Ways to Look Younger

7 Steps to Look Younger Instantly

I don’t know about you, but I’m not getting any younger over here. I’ve spent countless hours in the sun. So many, in fact, that I often wonder how I don’t resemble an oxidized leather handbag. BUT, only moments ago I was mistook for a 22-year-old (I’m 27) and I still get carded all the time (phew). Here is how I plan to keep it that way. Dare I miss out on a Bob Dylan name-drop opportunity here—forever young! Wait that just aged me about ten years. Whatever. Just keep reading.

Radiance transcends age! That post-exfoliating glow will go a longer way than you think.

Rodin Olio Lusso Face Oil, $140, Oliolusso-shop.com

This next step isn’t my favorite either, but we must wear sunscreen every day. You may ask yourself why the moisturizer that you love never seems to contain SPF, but this one does. AND it smells good AND it doesn’t feel heavy.

Malin + Goetz Face Moisturizer With SPF 15, $48, Beautybar.com

Skin Infections

kin Infection in the Hair Follicles

As the years go by and we mature as adults, we expect our skin to clear up from those unbearable acne breakouts. However sometimes there are many skin reactions that could lead to a new breakout or something just as bad or worse. There are conditions that can bring back those broken out faces of our teen years.

Razor burn is the name given to symptoms of skin redness, abrasion and irritation and ingrown hairs that appear as tiny blisters that are filled with pus, folliculitis or skin infection and more…

These problems appear when hair is pushed back into the follicle by utilizing incorrect shaving techniques. As the hair begins to grow back into the skin, the hair follicle becomes inflamed and the hairs get trapped, resulting in what we know as ingrown hairs. These ingrown hairs, or "razor bumps" are irritating, unattractive and can even develop into acne-like infections. They are also known to be uncomfortable and in many cases can be very painful.

This skin problem tends to occur more frequently in people with thicker, curlier hair and can affect the skin anywhere you shave or where other hair removal methods are applied. Improper shaving may also cause Folliculitis, where the hair grows slightly under the skin and becomes trapped, causing a bacterial infection similar to acne.

Skin infections

Folliculitis is caused by incorrect shaving techniques. It is often accompanied by inflammation and pus. The various treatments for this condition tends to alleviate the irritation, dry up, disinfect the pustules and desensitize the skin.

Skin Care

ow does the skin age?
One of the most striking signs of skin aging is the increased wrinkling of the face, neck and the area around the eyes. The formation of wrinkles on the skin is mainly due to the following factors:

• Aging

• Overstimulation of the facial muscles

•Repeated facial expressions

• Environmental factors especially exposure to

• UV radiation (photo-aging).

Aging: occurs naturally over time and is identified by certain biochemical, histological and physical changes. The dermis becomes thinner for two reasons. One is the reduction of the number of fibroblasts, which produce the essential macromolecules of the extra cellular matrix (collagen, elastin, fibronectin etc.).

The second is the reduced synthetic activity of fibroblasts. Facial Expression: When we express our motions, by smiling, frowning, squinting, our subcutaneous muscles contract thousands of times every day. These repeated movements create tension forces that modify the dermis and favour the appearance of expression wrinkles, especially in the forehead, above the mouth and around the eyes.

Photo-Aging: Exposure to solar Ultra Violet radiation is a well-known factor related to the premature aging of the skin and the formation of wrinkles. UV radiation causes oxidative stress in the dermis, resulting in suppression of the immune system of the skin and destruction of fibroblasts which are essential for the integrity of the connective tissue and consequently of the appearance of the skin.
